History Redeemer Presbyterian Church is located on the west side of Spartanburg. We are situated near half a dozen small towns that are gradually transitioning from rural communities into suburbs of Spartanburg.
In 1761, a group of Pennsylvania Irish settlers came to the area, joined a few years later by other settlers arriving directly from Ireland. Together, they settled the Tyger River highlands. The western edge of Spartanburg County was developed into farms and homesteads by these settlers.
Christian worship was very important to them, so they banded together for meetings. In 1772, a brick building, later known as the Nazareth Presbyterian Church, the oldest Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg County, was erected.
